MOVIE IN EDWARD TALKIES

Built in 1800s,The Edward Theatre -located in bustling Kalbadevi is one of the oldest gems in the city. Earlier they only used to screen B-grade movies but now the theatre has refurbished and reimagined the space as well as its image, without changing its structure, looks and feels. The ticket price is mere Rs.35 as the owner’s great-aunt wanted the poor to watch cinema and get away from their lives for those few hours

What makes this place so special?

This space actually was meant for plays and performances before it turned into a single screen theatre. It was meant for entertaining British expats who came to Bombay during the war. If you catch a show at this theatre, wait till the end. A heavy gold curtain descends after the last show of the day, like they used to show in old movies. The theatre’s most glorious run is said to have been because of the 1975 hit, Jai Santoshi Maa, as the film ran to house-full shows for a remarkable 48 weeks.

Keneseth Eliyahoo Synagogue

Built in 1884, this place is considered as one of the original inhabitants of Kala Ghoda and is still a centre for Jewish religious and cultural life. This place is a necessity after the 2008 terrorist attacks that targeted Mumbai’s Jewish community. The building was originally grey but accidentally painted blue by some painters several years ago. For better or for worse, the colour has defined the building, and most people now refer to it as “the Blue synagogue”.

RAILWAY MUSEUM-CST STATION

The gallery inside narrates the history of the Indian railways from the Great Indian Peninsular Railway Company's inception to the first train in 1853 that steamed with 400 passengers from Bori Bunder (CSMT) to Thane. There's the gryphon to guard against evil too. There's also Queen Victoria's former monument, uncrowned after the terminus was renamed in 1996 in memory of Maratha king Shivaji. The ticket is as cheap as Rs.200. The guided tour of its interiors is plunged with rushed anecdotes without much pause for soaking in the atmosphere, it is suggestable to linger on after the tour and retrace the trail once again to really appreciate what one has seen.

What makes this place so special?

The entire structure is a confluence of British and Indian aesthetic and symbolism. There are miniature models not just of the coaches but also of the entire heritage structure.

Prakash Shakahari Upahar Kendra in Dadar is an authentic, vegetarian Maharashtrian restaurant with a simple, unassuming menu and quick service. It serves snacks such as misal and sabudana puri and desserts such as shira and dudhi halwa which is to die for. Being a non-maharastran, has never loved maharastran food this much.
