Nawab-e-Delights

“You don't need a silver fork to eat good food”

- Paul Prudhomme

Lucknow, the land of Awadhi cuisine, has much more to offer than what meets the eye. Amid the nawabi atmosphere and the laziness that hangs in the air of this city, food is what keeps them running. From a wide range of lip-smacking kebabs to drool-worthy sweetmeats, Lucknow is heaven for gluttons!

I bring to you here some of the most tempting foods right across from the streets of Lucknow that would be nothing less than a treat for you.

1. Rahim Ki Nihari

This 125 year old eatery is famous for its slow cooked shank mutton meat. Every bite of the nihari served here gives an explosion full of authentic spices in your mouth. The mutton is served here in a thick and flavourful curry and tastes best with a soft gooey kulchas. The place is most crowded during the breakfast time and be prepared to meet even triple this crowd during the period of Ramzan.

The shop offers melt in the mouth uniquely spiced kebabs that’ll leave you longing for more! This succulent and juicy meat is best served with rumali rotis and is the most favourite stopover for any meat lover. Tunday Kebabi has two outlets exclusively in Lucknow. The outlet located in Aminabad is the main one with inside seating arrangement too and serves both mutton and beef kebabs, while the Chowk outlet serves only beef kebabs.

Khasta kachori serves as Lucknow’s favourite breakfast, and when you talk about khasta in Lucknow there’s only one name that comes up on every lucknowi’s tongue- Rati Lal’s Khasta Kachori. The place offers some of the lucknow’s crunchiest kachoris stuffed with soft and flavourful moong dal that will leave you drooling. They serve their khastas with deep-fried aloo sabzi and safed matar in semi-gravy, on a patta platter. This 83 year old eatery runs out of stock within three hours of opening… yes, that’s the love people have for their Khasta!

4. Shukla Chaat Bhandar

Shukla Chaat Bhandar has taken care of the sweet, savoury, spicy cravings of all the luchnowis ever since its inception. The stall covers a very small area and serves only 3 delectable chaat dishes- matar chaat, aloo chaat and batasha (aka pani puri in Mumbai, gol gappe in Delhi and puchka in Kolkata). The stall appears to be busy almost at all times of the day, mainly during the evening.

5. Prakash Ki Kulfi
